Dear Community of St. Augustine, Happy Easter!

Perhaps someone will find it funny my starting this letter with an Easter greeting; yet, we Christians continue to celebrate Easter, and reading today’s Gospel according to Matthew, chosen for the Feast of the Ascension, brought these words to my mind.

Happy Easter, because Jesus conquered death and He is the God of Life. Happy Easter, because we keep on celebrating this truth of our faith: we Christians are happy because Jesus never abandons us; He tells us, “I am with you always, until the end of time.” This promise of Jesus is fulfilled through the Holy Spirit. Jesus asks the Father to send an advocate to His disciples, someone who will accompany and strengthen them.

The Holy Spirit is with us always! In the first reading we hear Luke’s recounting the moment when Jesus ascended into Heaven; but before returning to the Father, He told His disciples, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Brothers and sisters, Jesus sends us to the world on a mission: to be His witnesses. For this we should strengthen ourselves with the Spirit of Truth. Are you opening your hearts and lives to receive the gifts of the Spirit? Are you fulfilling your mission to be witnesses to the Lord?

I invite you to get nourished by the wisdom of St. Augustine and I am sharing with you the following prayer that you may pray it during this week in preparation for Pentecost:

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.

May God Bless you abundantly!
